As the New Year’s festivities approach us, it is important to remember the dangers of drunk driving. By being aware of the alcohol intake of yourself and those around you, you can save your life and those of others by reminding them to not get behind the wheel. If you do plan on drinking this New Year’s Eve, make sure you secure an alternative way of transportation.

Driving Safe Around Drunk Drivers
Unfortunately, no matter how vigilant you are to not drink during your New Year’s festivities, you cannot control the actions of others. You may still experience someone on the road that can be under the influence, distracted or drowsy. A driver might be drunk if you notice them swerving, weaving in and out of traffic, drifting between lanes, speeding, stopping or starting suddenly, or dozing off behind the wheel. Once you spot a potentially drunk driver, act to protect yourself and others.
Slow Down to Increase the Distance Between You and the Drunk Driver
Slowly and safely get away from the intoxicated driver. A generous driving distance can give you more reaction time if the driver creates a dangerous situation.
Call the Police
Once you are a safe distance away from the driver, call 911 to report a non-emergency situation. State that you believe a driver is drunk and give a description of the car and your location.
Pull Over
If you are unable to get away from the drunk driver, pulling over may be the best option to avoid colliding with the drunk driver. Pull over to a safe location on the side of the road and call the police. In many cases, if there is a collision, it will end up as a hit-and-run.
Don’t Engage With the Drunk Driver
Do not try to pull up next to the drunk driver and flag them down or stop their vehicle. Drunk drivers can be violent and unpredictable. Keep your distance and wait for the police to arrive.
Your safest bet is to avoid driving during the holidays. If you plan on drinking and traveling, use public transportation to decrease the chances of a collision. Have a Safe and Happy New Year!
